August 2014 - December 2014

The purpose of this project is to give undergraduate students an idea of what it is like to be an engineer. Our team designed and created a 10-15 minute show to entertain 6-year-old audience using a variety of skills, such as but not limited to Solidworks, 3D printing, woodwork, programming, and circuitry. Each individual member created a computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D print a part that contributes to the final product.

Final paper available upon request.

Christmas Wonderland: About
  • –Responsibilities: Create and program a penguin to sing “Jingle Bells”

  • –Skills/Software: 3D Printing, Arduino, SolidWorks

  • –Challenges: Designing the penguin based on the RC servo

    • –Designed the penguin in half; used pegs to connect

    • –Had to add a support for the servo to be placed on inside the penguin that is leveled to the mouth

    • –Hot glued one end of the dowel on servo arm; used styrofoamas the beak and attached it to the other end of the dowel

    • –Had to drill a vertical slot by the mouth area to allow the servo arm to translate up and down

  • –Lessons learned:

  • –Servos were not precise to control rotation

    • –The movement of the mouth controlled by the servo was not precise as each loop had some slight differences in position; this made it difficult to exactly match the position of the mouth to the lyrics
